April 16, 2018 -- Rape Kit Documentary

As you know, I’ve been pushing for legislation to clear the rape kit backlog for three years now.

This year, I introduced AB 3118 to require an audit of all untested rape kits in California, and am working with Senator Connie Leyva to pass SB 1449, which will require testing of all new kits.

This isn’t just a California issue. It is estimated there are hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits across the country.

Tonight, HBO will premiere its new documentary, I Am Evidence. The documentary was produced by Mariska Hargitay, the lead actress of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which provides support to women who have been sexually abused. She’s been a longtime advocate for survivors of sexual assault and rape, and has brought much-needed attention to the rape kit backlog.

If you’re able to, I hope you’ll watch the documentary when it premieres tonight at 8pm. It is truly powerful.

Our work is far from done, but this issue is finally starting to get the attention it deserves. As our bills move forward, I’ll keep you posted.
